Urban fantasy is a sub-genre of fantasy where a plot including fantastic and/or supernatural elements has an urban setting, generally a contemporary city. Often viewed as including darker elements than a normal fantasy novel, it tends to come in adult or young adult flavours.

The former tends to be a cross-over between the noir and fantasy genres, with a first-person narrative and the plot often being crime related. Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series is a generally well-regarded example. The latter is more commonly a coming of age story set in a modern world but with the fantastical elements. Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been provided as an example of this sub-genre, as it fits the description well.
