My interpretation now, and maybe then, is not necessarily that the crew were Christians but that they would interpret monotheism as an advancement over Roman polytheism and maybe an indication that the Empire would become less violent, because we know how peaceful Europe was once the Church started running things. I forget how the episode ended regarding the future of the empire, if they had somehow stopped it or not. I think they just escaped without mucking with things.

Sep 9, 2016 at 1:53 | comment | added | Harry Johnston | At least one episode of ToS was blatantly pro-religious, or at least implied that the crew were Christians. The Reveal was that a supposedly primitive tribe were Son-worshippers, i.e., Christians, instead of Sun-worshippers as had previously been supposed.
Sep 8, 2016 at 0:00 | comment | added | MikeC | Star Trek (in any of its incarnations) didn't really emphasize being anti-religious. There was one TV show that I think was made by the same people as TOS was that aired after TOS went off the air that was blatantly anti-religious. Also Clarke and others. In comparison, Star Trek seemed to avoid attacking religion directly.
