What happens to someone's lightsaber when they die Why aren't (ex-)Jedi lightsabers more common?

It seems to me that many of the Star Wars movies show Jedi dying in some way or another. For instanceSome are obviously destroyed in the Clone Wars on Geonosis, Yoda's disappearance, or heck even General Grievousbattle (not a Jedi)! The question then becomes what happens to their dangerous and incredibly intimidating lightsabers?

From what I've seenPlo Koon, for example) but many of the lightsabersaren't and are destroyed in one way or anothersimply left with the deceased's effects. Dooku's lightsaber, for instance, was lost on his ship in Revenge ofAfter the Sith, and I presume manyfall of the lightsabers lost inJedi Order there should have been thousands of the Clone Wars were destroyed. Many however are not, such as Ben Kenobi's when Vader "strikes him down", or Yoda's when he passes away peacefullythings lying around.

I can't seem to fathom random people finding these magical destruction sticks like Maz and knowing that "oh this should be returned", so whatWhat happens(ed) to the majority of the Jedi lightsabers that, for whatever reason, no longer have an owner and why are they viewed as so uncommon?

I read this question about only a few remaining after the Clone Wars, but what about during the Clone Wars or during the following 20 years? Do they just self-destruct or become part of the force-ghost?
