I've known plenty of these and they choose "the group" over the girl more often than not from what I've observed (as a Geeky girl in school whose best friends were the Geeky boys and a teacher).

Aug 27, 2012 at 2:31 | comment | added | Andres F. | @DVK your premise about geek behavior is flawed. I was a teenage geek as well, and there were a great many things I wouldn't stop doing for any girl, no matter how big the crush. Habit very often defeats teenage love ;)

Aug 26, 2012 at 22:08 | comment | added | Dason | @DVK generalizing much? And who is to say that Snape is a "normal geek"?
Aug 26, 2012 at 19:32 | comment | added | DVK-on-Ahch-To | @GabeWillard - If it's pretty solid, post it but don't expect an accept. I will only accept the answer from the horse's mouth (no offense to JKR :) . But just to be clear, my reasoning for the theory stems from the Q&A I linked and not from the quote itself. NO NORMAL GEEK would EVER behave this way.

Aug 26, 2012 at 17:22 | comment | added | Gabe Willard | I think this is a case of ignoring the context of a quote and coming out with some unusual subtext. My comments on @Slytherincess' answer elaborate on my interpretation of the quote. I can reproduce them as a developed answer here, but since I have no new direct quotes from JKR, only interpretation of current quotes, I'm not sure it fits your requirements.
Aug 26, 2012 at 16:45 | comment | added | DVK-on-Ahch-To | @SachinShekhar - I'm not saying that. JKR seems to be. The technical term would be either bisexual or pansexual depending on specific details in JKR's mind.
