It was asked on the Movies SE and while there isn't an accepted answer the connection to Zombies not attacking each other and carnivorous animals not killing and eating each other was made. movies.stackexchange.com/questions/9884/…

Dec 4, 2014 at 17:54 | comment | added | Null♦ | @Richard Sorry, I don't think I was clear. I was wondering if the crew of Serenity viewed the recording in the room where the Alliance scientist was killed. If so then the Reavers were in the area, possibly early enough to kill the nearby members of the pacified population and leave evidence of murder. Of course, that's not definitive since the Alliance scientist was on Miranda well after the fact.
Dec 4, 2014 at 17:48 | comment | added | Valorum | They're very nearby. The implication is that she (and her crew) have done a brief survey, been attacked by the Reavers and she's headed back to the shuttle to try to avoid them. She records and transmits a brief message but doesn't have time to finish it before being killed.
Dec 4, 2014 at 17:35 | comment | added | Null♦ | Hmm, but were they in the room where the Alliance scientist made the recording? How close were they to where she was killed? That would mean the Reavers were in the area.

Dec 4, 2014 at 17:34 | comment | added | Valorum | We don't see them do a planetary survey, they land very close to the wrecked shuttle, then get attacked, then leave.
Dec 4, 2014 at 17:31 | comment | added | Valorum | Each reaver would have to kill 999 people. 10% of 1% is 1:1000. We know from the recording that they were traveling in roving bands, targeting people who're awake/mobile. That could easily explain why they happened to land in an unscathed area.
Dec 4, 2014 at 17:29 | comment | added | Null♦ | @Richard That is a good point but with a population that doesn't even try to run away the Reavers should have been able to murder most of them within a few days. Each Reaver only has to murder 999 people in the span of a few days to kill off the entire pacified population. That seems within the realm of possibility to me.
