It certainly looks like it climbs up and out of sight, but it's not explicit that it goes out the hole in the roof. It's also strange that nobody thought to go looking for it if it did escape. My money is on Blair being infected by the tissue he came in contact with during the autopsy--he actually touches his pencil to his mouth after using it to prod the dead Thing.

I've always believed part of the Dog Thing managed to escape. You can clearly see two claws/hands come out of it, break the wooden roof and climb up. I think this part is also responsible for infecting Blair. And it may be the giant Thing in the movie's finale.

Apr 2, 2016 at 21:30 | comment | added | Petersaber | God damn it, I've seen "The Thing" as a child and I was totally fine, but now that I am older and understand more, even reading about all this is just revolting, urgh
Dec 7, 2015 at 4:52 | comment | added | RobertF | @WadCheber - Don't forget The Thing has one of the funniest lines in movie history: "I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time, I'd rather not spend the rest of this winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH!" :)

Jul 9, 2015 at 20:22 | comment | added | Wad Cheber | @FrankCedeno Here's a link to the story. It is very short, and very, very good. You can probably read it in less than 10 minutes: clarkesworldmagazine.com/watts_01_10
Jul 9, 2015 at 20:20 | comment | added | Wad Cheber | @FrankCedeno - You should have come to the live blog viewing last night. It was fun. By the way, have you read The Things by Peter Watts? It is a short story based on the movie, but written from the perspective of the Thing. It makes the Thing a sympathetic character. It's available for free online.
Jul 9, 2015 at 20:18 | comment | added | Wad Cheber | @FrankCedeno It's my favorite movie, at least in the horror and horror/science fiction genres. It is the best example of its kind. Absolutely brilliant. A masterpiece. Carpenter is a god.
