Mar 16, 2016 at 3:51 comment added dgo This might be the best answer to any question ever.
Jan 21, 2016 at 6:07 comment added user46509 @WadCheber he doesn't know it's the ring when he says it. He even mentions later that he made a rash vow. That's my point
Jan 20, 2016 at 22:31 comment added Wad Cheber @AncalagonTheBlack - I never said Faramir wanted to pick up the Ring - I said he didn't want to. "But fear no more! I would not take this thing, if it lay by the highway. Not were Minas Tirith falling in ruin and I alone could save her, so, using the weapon of the Dark Lord for her good and my glory. No, I do not wish for such triumphs, Frodo son of Drogo."
Jan 20, 2016 at 21:38 comment added user46509 A minor thing, Faramir does not say he would to pick up the ring. He doesn't know what it is at that point, but holds himself honour bound to reject it once he finds out the nature of what Frodo is carrying
Jul 22, 2015 at 22:42 comment added Janus Bahs Jacquet A minor thing (and Martinez’ rather than yours anyway), but aren't the Barrow-Downs outside the borders Tom Bombadil has set up for his land?

Jul 20, 2015 at 23:31 comment added Wad Cheber @jamesqf - At that point, Cirdan's ring wasn't being manipulated by the One Ring.
Jul 20, 2015 at 23:27 comment added jamesqf Re "‘A Ring of Power looks after itself, Frodo. It may slip off treacherously, but its keeper never abandons it. At most he plays with the idea of handing it on to someone else’s care..." Yet Cirdan the Shipwright gave the Ring of Fire to Gandalf when he first came to Middle Earth.

Jul 15, 2015 at 6:56 comment added Wad Cheber @N_Soong - I edited it again, and this time I went over the limit of how many characters an answer can contain. The new material was much more important than some of the previous material, so I deleted the less important stuff. I realized that I had overlooked the best way to explain why the Ring is so tempting. We can see the answer by looking at the only person who is immune to the Ring: Tom Bombadil. I hope the revised version of the answer is better than the previous version.

Jul 15, 2015 at 1:57 comment added Wad Cheber @N_Soong - I actually have more to add to the answer - so much that I'm a bit worried that the answer will be too long to post if I add it. I'm putting the finishing touches on the additional material, and then I'll try to get it in there.
