I was literally just going to ask about this very story when I saw this post (different question) because it's one of my favorite SciFi stories, even though it's so short.
@Valorum - Ah that is a fair point. I asked it this way because I was wondering if someone knew whether this was a semi-intentional plot point by the writers or just happenstance.
@AncientSwordRage - It seems I am having a difficult time discerning what is required of a quality question. SciFi/Fantasy are, for me, purely about opinion, speculation, and personal interpretation of words or movies. I can see several questions in the "Related" column to the right that look virtually no different than mine yet I have two downvotes already. For instance, scifi.stackexchange.com/q/225020/136731 is 100% hypothetical and opinion based, is it not? What am I missing? (I seem to do better in the Physics SE)
Read The Rest of the Robots and enjoy and you'll notice it has nothing to do with the movie (the Robot series are also virtually unrelated to that movie). On a similar note, the original book I am Legend is almost nothing like the movie featuring Will Smith (not Will's fault, just typical movie writers messing with a good story).
@user205186 - No, this is not true. The speed difference between the two would not be negligible otherwise it would take months or even years for the debris to lap them in orbit. See my answer at: physics.stackexchange.com/a/222298/59023
