According to the uname output in the movie, this was a sun4m i386 running "Solar OS". Solaris succeeded SunOS in 1992. Speculation time: perhaps Kevin / ENCOM had influence at Sun Microsystems as well, and the Grid runs on a research/custom version of Solaris? ;-) The hardware might have been a secret, souped up SPARCstation, or a cluster of them, and based upon the little-endian Intel 80386 chip instead of the big-endian SPARC architecture of SPARCstations from Sun. The endian-ness might also be important for using the ENCOM trans-matter technology, which predated SPARC by at least 4 years.
