This book is set in a city where frequent sex (without pleasure) is the only way to survive. Then, somebody falls in love. May be first book of a trilogy. Would have been written before 2001.

I should say it is not really a “graphic” book, more like a philosophical book. Male author I think.

  • Hi, welcome to SF&F. Do you happen to recall the cover art, or even just the colour of the cover?

  • Well, if humans aren't required, The Mote in God's Eye comes close. Moties die after a certain duration of not being pregnant.

  • @Spencer Dying from not being pregnant is actually a thing in some types of animals - mustelids like ferrets only ovulate if stimulated by breeding activity, so if not stimulated they can succumb to the effects of prolonged estrogen exposure, which results in bone marrow toxicity and death. Weird, but true, see the section labeled Hyperestrogenism under Urogential disorders in this scientific article on ferret biology (WARNING - images of dissections, and medical procedures in the article).

The answer to the question is SexLife (2003) by A.A. Clifford.

New York City, 2268 A.D.
Our world is a social utopia; a place where intellect and talent are the prizes of the day. The subways fly, the taxis have legs and technology has advanced humankind to a level where there is no poverty, no crime and no strife.
But if you don't have sex five times each day, you will die.
All human beings have a disease called CMB which forces them to copulate repeatedly or perish. This ailment has also destroyed the connection between sex and pleasure, turning the act into simple biological maintenance. People are now fragile creatures, unable to reach even the simplest of emotions.
Joe is a typical resident of First City, once known as New York. His peaceful life changes after a fateful encounter with Vella, a mysterious and alluring woman. Their union results in a miracle which takes them to erotic passion, ultimate danger, and a truth that will forever change the world's belief in sex and the meaning of life that was once tied to it.

And it's a really good book. It's described just like the gentleman said. It's a world where drugs are tailor made for you at work to deal with any and everything and it's really extreme where young people are sent off to sex prep areas to be broken in for sex at an early age.

Is this "The World Inside" by Robert Silverberg? It's not a perfect match by any means.

The Urbmons are a world of total sexual license where men are expected to engage in "night walking"; it is considered very rude to refuse an invitation for sex.
