re. "It seems unlikely that Frodo and Sam would journey as far South as Osgiliath, given that they were aiming for the Black Gate.": When they met Faramir, they had already seen the Black Gate and had found it to be impenetrable, and had decided to instead try their luck near Minas Tirith (which is as far south as Osgiliath). So they were indeed on purpose travelling as far south as Osgiliath, along the western border of Mordor.
So Luke cannot become the king, but maybe he can inherit the senator title from his mother? I mean, if they elect their queens, who knows how they choose their senators - maybe those titles are inherited?
Half-related, is there any fan-fiction which describes an alternative Middle-Earth where the ring was used against Sauron? "Saruman, failing to get possession of the Ring, would in the confusion and treacheries of the time have found in Mordor the missing links in his own researches into Ring-lore" sounds like an awesome premise :-D
Oh, nice... IIRC Judi Dench didn't star in Pitch Black but did so in the sequel (The Chronicles of Riddick). Also, "aliens from the id" might rather be a reference to "Forbidden Planet" - but maybe someone can shed more light on this reference? Anyway, more of these puzzles please :-)
Note that the "I read it in a book once" line probably refers to the beginning of the movie, where Shrek reads this story from the book which he uses as toilet paper.
Thanks, this sounds quite similar, but is still not exactly the same story I read. But I've come to think that the original book I read contained SF stories by amateur writers, and it's quite possible that the stories were largely influenced by existing stories (like "After Ixmal" or "Last Starfighter"). Just my luck that I read the imitations instead of the originals :-)
