A Dyson sphere is a gigantic structure of truly astronomical proportion. It consists of some exotic material which completely encloses a star, making it possible to capture all of that star's energy. Species capable of constructing such are by definition a Type II Kardashev civilization.
Similar structures include Niven rings, Alderson disks, and Matrioshka brains.
